In the Magazine
Introducing: The Skeptic Magazine

The Skeptic is the UK’s longest running and foremost sceptical magazine, which examines science, scepticism, secularism, critical thinking and claims of the paranormal. We are a non-profit magazine published quarterly, although single issues and yearly subscriptions are available online or by post.

We hope the magazine can be an invaluable resource for journalists, teachers, psychologists, and inquisitive people of all ages. Further details about the magazine can be found here.

The magazine is celebrating the conclusion of its 21st year of publication with a relaunch issue which includes new columnists and features, a new format and an increase in size. The new magazine has a much cleaner, more modern appearance and will carry a celebrity sceptic interview in each issue, beginning with an interview with James Randi in Volume 22, Issue 1. Details of the interview and a film of Randi can be found in the Media Archive.

The magazine is also in the privileged position of being able to boast support from an Editorial Advisory Board of thirty seven internationally respected and expert individuals, including: James Randi, Richard Dakwins, Paul Kurtz, Stephen Fry, Derren Brown, Brian Cox, Robin Ince, Tim Minchin, Elizabeth Loftus, P.Z. Myers, Simon Singh, Susan Blackmore, Ray Hyman and David Colquhoun. We would like to publicly thank each of the EAB members (full list here) for their kind involvement, for which we are extremely grateful.

In addition to the magazine, we run a blog for news and articles, a YouTube account for media, and a Twitter account and RSS feed for general updates. We like to receive comments, contributions and criticism through the contact page and are keen to promote organisations and individuals who also publish reliable and interesting content, so please feel free to get in touch.

Image: Keep libel laws out of scienceSense about Science (SAS) is an organisation concerned with "the misrepresentation of science and scientific evidence on issues that matter to society". One of the most recent and high-profile cases to receive attention from SAS is that of the British Chiropractic Association's legal case claiming libel against Dr Simon Singh, following the puclication of his column in The Guardian newspaper on 19/04/2008.

Aside from being one of the UK's most noted science communicators, Dr Singh is also a member of the newly formed Editorial Advisory Board  for The Skeptic Magazine (the full list of members will be announced very shortly). As such, we are proud to support this cause, campaigning to keep the English libel laws out of science, and to prevent well-intended critical discussion of scientific and social issues from being hindered or silenced by the prospect of legal action.

This campaign and Sense About Science have received considerable attention recently from an advert published in Nature and the writings of numerous journalists and bloggers. The campaign has also received support from many notable academics and celebrities, some of whom are listed in this advert which will be printed in the forthcoming issue of The Skeptic.

Following an edited reprint of Dr Singh's article in COSMOS magazine today, The Skeptic is also making the article available online. Although this is not an exact reprint of the original article, it has been approved for publication by Dr Singh's lawyers.

Please feel free to circulate the article and to respond with comments on the blog or Twitter. Also, take a look at the monuments supporting the Sense About Science campaign in Second Life.
