“Recovered” Memories Authentic? – Leicester Skeptics in the Pub

Hi Skeptics,

Just a quick reminder about Skeptics in the Pub this Tuesday.  Dr Cara Laney
from Leicester University will be talking about recovered memories.

I’m amused by www.hypnosisinleicester.co.uk offering their Past Life
Regression Therapy service when they say: “are you one of those people that
goes through life questioning everything? then this is not for you.”

Please note that April & May’s talks have switched round.

See you Tuesday,

Simon

Dr Cara Laney: Are “Recovered” Memories Authentic?

Tuesday, March 17 at 7:30PM

The Park
5-9 Hotel Street
Leicester
LE1 5AW

Can people repress traumas like child sexual abuse and then recover their
traumatic memories years or decades later? Sigmund Freud proposed this
coping mechanism and modern therapists have argued that it is common. This
talk will consider whether these “recovered” memories might instead be false
memories.

Cara Laney is a lecturer of forensic psychology at the University of
Leicester. Her main area of research is human memory and the myriad ways it
can go wrong. She has published more than a dozen articles on memory related
topics.

Leeds Skeptics in the Pub – March 21st

    Hi All,

This month’s Skeptics in the Pub is taking place next SATURDAY which is
March 21st. As usual it will kick off at 2PM and run throughout the
afternoon, basically as long as people want to keep chatting and drinking
    it will continue.

The usual format, starts with a short talk and is then
followed by plenty of good natured discussions over a few pints.

Venue is Carpe Diem as normal, if you haven’t been there before it is at
the bottom of Millenium Square in Leeds city centre, it is opposite the
garden bit and there are some stairs down to it, go down the stairs,
through the main doors and turn left and it is the room right in front of
    you.

    Hope to see you there!

    Chris

Gary Mannion to take the Test?

      A POTENTIAL APPLICANT

Gary MannionI’ve been informed that there has been a £50,000 challenge issued to one Gary Mannion, a twenty-year-old British “psychic surgeon” who is rapidly gaining recognition in the UK. Mannion claims to effect miraculous healing on his patients through the intervention of his spirit friend “Abraham” and he says that this isn’t just any old Abraham, but the very same one of Biblical fame, and that he – Gary – knows this to be true because when he Googled the name, the Google image he got he recognized as that of his friend Abraham from the Old Testament! Mannion is very careful to stay on the right side of the law, qualifying his extravagant assertions with disclaimers such as “I am not a doctor,” and “I don’t claim to cure cancer,” although the many testimonials on his many websites tell a different story.

Growing increasingly concerned about Mannion, UK skeptic Jon Cohen has offered to give him £50,000 if he can prove that his claims are genuine. Professor Chris French from Goldsmiths, University of London, has offered to carry out the test. Mannion has agreed to be tested, and a meeting has been scheduled to discuss protocols. I may even be able to meet this “surgeon” in person when I travel to the UK in April…!

What a rich life I lead!

However, I must admit that I’m surprised to learn that Google’s images of long-dead Biblical personages are so accurate…!
